happy-woman-eating-vegetables-lakeway-cosmeticEveryone wants a smile bright enough to glow in a dim room, but many don’t realize their ideal smile can be attained using common household foods. It isn’t necessary to use harsh chemicals that break down your teeth’s natural defenses. Sure, this may leave them white quicker, but they become weaker and more prone to stains in the future. The items listed below are healthier habits and remedies that will build a long-term healthy smile.

1. Cheese

Fermented dairy causes the mouth to salivate more so than any other dairy product. The increased production of saliva cause the pH level of your mouth to rapidly spike, making it more alkaline. Due to the drastic change, your mouth’s acidity is neutralized; neutralizing plaque acid will help prevent future cavities and tooth decay. Cheese also forms a protective layer of film on teeth, furthermore preventing the acids from attacking your tooth enamel.

2. Crunchy Fruits and Vegetables

Nature is full of delicious, nutritious toothbrushes. Apples, celery, carrots and pears are all great examples of crispy produce that are abrasive enough to gently scrape the plaque off your teeth during consumption.

3. Strawberries

It may seem counterintuitive that such a sweet, delicious berry can be healthy for your teeth, but strawberries can give you a whiter smile with correct use. Crush them up into a pulp, brush it on, and wait five minutes without rinsing. I recommend watching some videos on youtube, maybe some cats or mountain biking footage. After five minutes make sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush your teeth with toothpaste. There are high levels of malic acid in strawberries, which is a natural teeth whitening agent. Strawberries also contain high levels of natural sugars, so be sure to rinse and brush afterwards!
Bonus: Nothing beats old fashioned brushing and flossing for everyday teeth care. All of the above methods should be used in conjunction with your (hopefully) normal brushing and flossing habits!
