You might think you only need to watch what you eat if you want to lose weight, but you should also be aware of what goes into your body for your teeth’s sake. Your dental enamel can be easily damaged if you eat or drink certain things.

Perhaps you know that coffee and soda can harm your teeth because of their acid and staining power, but here are four foods you might not know can harm your oral health:

  • Yogurt: Even though yogurt is great for your digestive health, it has lactic acid, which can erode your tooth enamel. Certain yogurt also is loaded with sugar that can lead to tooth decay.
  • Pickles or pickled veggies: Anything pickled can be harmful for your teeth because the brine the vegetable sits in is very acidic. Try to avoid eating pickles in large quantities to protect your teeth enamel.
  • Raisins: Even though you might enjoy eating raisins as a healthy snack, they are loaded with sugar and are sticky. This means they can sit on your teeth and build-up bacteria that leads to painful cavities and tooth decay.
  • Starchy foods: You might enjoy eating white bread, potato chips and french fries, but this kind of food sticks to your teeth easily and converts to sugar very quickly, which can harm your teeth.

To protect your oral health, you don’t have to stop eating all these foods, but it’s important to eat them in moderation. Also, drink water immediately after eating any of them to quickly remove the acid or sugar that could harm your teeth.
