Did you know around 450 million toothbrushes are thrown into landfills every year in the U.S.? Since you should replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or when the bristles start to fray, that is a lot of toothbrushes going to waste.

But now World Centric has created a new toothbrush that won’t pile up in the landfill once you are done with it. These toothbrushes are derived from plants instead of petroleum based plastics, so they can be composted.

Even though the bristles aren’t compostable, there is a notch between the head and handle so you can just break that part off and send the handle to a composting facility. And don’t worry if you don’t have a composting facility near you—you can send World Centric your toothbrush, and they will compost it for you.

The toothbrushes have been certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute and will fully compost within three to six months after arriving at the composting facility. Once you need a new toothbrush, your old one will already be composted.

The toothbrushes come in blue, green and orange and will cost $4.55. They will be available at Whole Foods and other natural grocery stores.
