A new candy created by a German company that produces natural products designed to improve the health of consumers, claims to reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth thus preventing cavities. While sugar free candies reduce the production of the harmful, cavity causing bacteria, they don’t actually combat it.
How It Works
There are both good and bad bacteria in your mouth. One type of good bacteria can actually reduce the amount of bad bacteria that adheres to your teeth and accordingly causes cavities. Researchers mixed a small, heat-killed amount of this bacteria into one sample of sugar free candy, and twice as much into a second sample. There was a third candy sample that didn’t contain any bacteria. Experiment participants were asked to eat five of one kind of candy over the course of two days. They were also instructed to abstain from any regular oral hygiene habits.
At the end of the study the participants who ate the candy with the highest amount of bacteria had 75% less bad bacteria in their mouth than the participants who ate the bacteria-less candy. They were also shown to greatly reduce the amount of bad bacteria in their mouth after only consuming one candy. The group whose candy had some of the good bacteria saw results after two.
Even with these results, there are benefits to consuming just plain sugar free candy. It stimulates your saliva production washing away harmful bacteriaa. You can achieve the same benefits by chewing on a piece of sugarless gum.
Until this particular candy hits the market be sure to keep your consumption to a minimum, or try sugar free. Keep the bad bacteria at bay with regular cleanings from Lakeway Cosmetic Dentistry!
