Every time you taste ice cream, chomp down on a sugary dessert, or savor soup, do you do you get shooting teeth pain? If you do, it probably means you have sensitive teeth.

You feel teeth pain when you eat something sweet, hot or cold because your teeth have exposed nerves, also known as dentin. Sensitive teeth are caused by many factors, but some of the most common ones are:

  • Cavities
  • Brushing your teeth too hard
  • Gum line recession

Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth

If you have sensitive teeth, you don’t want to do anything that would cause even more teeth pain. That’s why it’s important to choose the right toothpaste for sensitive teeth. The best toothpastes for sensitive teeth are desensitizing toothpastes like Sensodyne or any other desensitizing toothpaste you find at the drugstore.

Desensitizing toothpastes diminish sensitivity by blocking off the dentinal tubules, so that your nerves don’t get stimulated. Instead of using it like you would a normal toothpaste, it’s best to put it on your finger or on a cotton swab and massage it into your sensitive spots before going to bed. Spit, but don’t rinse out your mouth with water. After a few weeks you should see a decrease in your teeth sensitivity.

Since teeth sensitivity can be a sign of a deeper oral health issue, it’s important to contact your dentist once you start to feel teeth pain. The Lakeway Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is here to help you and your family with any of your oral health needs. Contact us today to set-up your appointment.
