Gum, mints, mouthwash. These are some things we look for when we feel a little self-conscious about our breath. Eating garlic and smelly foods aren’t the only reasons why we might experience bad breath. Let’s take a look at some of the causes of bad breath.

Causes of Bad Breath:

  • First things first, it could be the garlic. Yes, garlic and other foods such as broccoli or cilantro can contribute to bad breath. The bad news is that there isn’t really a fix to get that garlic breath out of your mouth after it’s absorbed into the bloodstream. Consider eating other foods when you’re out on a date or eating less garlic!
  • Maybe your mouth is dry. It’s important to keep your mouth moist and lubricated because this promotes saliva production, which assists in the breakdown of food when we eat. When your mouth is dry, it can create a buildup of bacteria along with an unpleasant smell.
  • Do you smoke? Smoking or chewing tobacco does not only contribute to bad breath; it also stains your teeth and increases your risk of gum disease.
  • Bad breath can be a sign of infection. If you still experience bad breath and you can’t find a cause for it, your bad breath could be sign that your body has an infection.

The simplest way to keep bad breath under control is practicing good dental hygiene. That means brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. If you’re interested in scheduling a consultation, give us a call at Lakeway Cosmetic Dentistry, we’d love to see you.
