Many people have dental anxiety or a dental phobia. Whether it is the sound of teeth drilling or smell of dental medication, they just can’t bear it. To relieve anxiety, dental patients are turning to something called sedation dentistry. This allows them to be less fearful of dental visits, but also lets dentists take care of their patients with ease.

What is sedation dentistry?

A sedation is given to a patient (usually by mouth or inhaled through the nose) that slows action in your central nervous system. You are completely aware of your surroundings, but you are less responsive to things like the sound of a drill. Sedation dentistry has also been coined as anxiety-free dentistry and sleep dentistry.

What You Should Know About Sedation Dentistry:

  • People react differently to sedation, your dental professional will ask you about your prescriptions and health history to minimize any risk of harm. Sedation dentistry does not carry many side effects, but if you have any questions, make sure you ask your dental professional.

  • It will be a good idea to enlist in a buddy. You will not be able to operate heavy machinery for at least 24 hours, so ask your friend, spouse, or family member to take you to your appointment.

  • On a related note, when you schedule your appointment, you should probably take time off work. Because you will not be able to operate heavy machinery, it is unlikely you will be able to work to full capacity.

It’s completely optional, but something to consider if you feel that you sedation dentistry can help you at your next dental visit, contact us at Lakeway Cosmetic Dentistry for a consultation.
